So, where I ask myself is the best holiday destination from London and other parts of UK for us Brits? The ideal flight time for me is 4-5 hours and looking on the world map, there are a host of warm, luxurious and relaxing destinations within that flying time. Shame, none of the travel companies like Best at Travel, Kuoni, Virgin Holidays, Letsgo2 or Holiday Hypermarket ever consider that. You end up searching these sites for hours with a highly confused state of mind. Having been through this, I decided to post a little research for those facing the same dilemma as me.So, which are the best Holiday destinations for people flying from the UK?This listing will help you find your next holiday.

First, where do us Brits go most on holiday? I went through some search records on Google and found the following:

Top Holiday Destinations (by number of travellers from UK every year)

1. Spain holidays Since Spain is the most popular holiday destination for us Brits with over a million searches a month, I’ve divided Spain into regions to fully calculate its popularity.

Majorca holidays – Majorca or Mallorca is heaven. I’ve been there myself. With a vibrant nightlife and amazing scenic views and beaches, this largest of all Spanish island tops Spanish holiday charts with over 300,000 monthly searches for Majorca alone. If you’re looking for a party place or an opportunity to be in the quiet surrounded by nature, Majorca is your best bet.
Tenerife holidays – Tenerife is the largest of the 7 canary Islands in the Atlantic ocean. Just off the coast of Morocco, Africa, this Spanish territory commands the status of one of the most popular tourist destinations around the world. As they say, the place where spring never ends, Tenerife is the highest point of Spain with its Mount Teide volcano. The temperature averages 20 degrees celcius throughout the year and is considered to be the best in the world by many. 320,000 searches online every month.
Gran Canaria holidays – Also one of the seven canary islands, the Gran Canaria is the second largest and second most populated after Tenerife. Volcanic in nature, The Gran Canaria offers a unique natural experience, with fissure vents, different soil and vegetation. The Gran Canaria is famous for its family holidays and is full of well appointed resorts. 180,000 monthly searches.
Ibiza holidays – Ibiza is a beautiful little Spanish island located in the Mediterranean sea that has become hugely popular as a holiday top spot in the last 35 years. What makes Ibiza special is the extended coast line of sandy beaches, a chilled out way of life and seclusion. As all Spanish holidays, Ibiza town will offer you a buzzing nightlife and for those looking for peace and quiet, there are plenty of resorts surrounded by nature and tranquility. 135,000 searches per month.
Other notable Spanish holiday destinations – With a 100,000 British people searching for holiday packages in Benidorm, this is the 5th most popular Spanish holiday destination followed by Costa del Sol at 60,000 searches and Lanzarote (another beautiful canary island) with 55,000 searches. Recommended – Spain holidays

If you haven’t yet experienced a Spanish holiday, you haven’t yet been on your best holiday. Majorca alone gets 2.5 million British holiday makers a year and 2008 was a record high.

2. Cyprus holidays – Cyprus is the number 2 holiday destination for us Brits. On average, 400,000 of us search for Cyprus holidays online every month. Yes! Every Month! No wonder I’ve been to Cyprus twice myself. In Cyprus, most popular spots are Limassol and Paphos – Paphos is full of ancient sites as old as 4th century BC, lies in the southwest of Cyprus and is a world heritage site by UNESCO. Limassol is the capital of southern Cyprus and is a popular shopping destination.

3. Turkey holidays – With just under 400,000 searches on Google alone, Turkey is the third most visited holiday destination for British holiday makers. The ex-Ottoman empire with a taste of Asia within Europe, Turkey is a top holiday destination where you’ll find snow-capped mountains and sunny beaches at a few hours’ distance. Istanbul, the largest city is where we flock most to, to live the Sultan size life for a few relaxing days.

4. Greece holidays – Close on the heels of Turkey, Greece holidays are very popular amonst British people. With just under 400,000 searches online a month, we love Greece, especially the Island of Crete. Crete, as legend goes, was where the Greek God Zeus was born and is the present resting place of Greek Gods. The southern-most of all Greek islands, Crete is the meeting point of Africa, Asia and Europe. If you’re looking for a busy, choc-a-block resort holiday, Greece is the place for you, where not UK holiday makers, but tourists from all over the world flck in great numbers.

5. Egypt holidays – Enter Africa – Egypt is our 5th most visited holiday destination and top-most in Africa. With 320,000 searches every month, we Brits get-away to Egypt often during the winter. The gorgeous clear waters of river Nile, 5000+ years of history, tourist attractions like the pyramids and cities like the Sharm El Sheikh (the city of Peace) surrounded by the Red sea and Mount Sinai are top reasons for Egypt being a top holiday destination. I’ve been to Egypt twice and I’m in love with that place. People are friendly and forthcoming.

6. America Holidays

Las Vegas holidays – I would have imagined America to be much higher up in the list of our top holiday destinations, but the long plane journeys and shortage of natural beauty are two major reasons why most people visit the United States for its advancements, not untouched natural places. Las Vegas leads as one of USA’s top holiday destinations. The city most popular for its casinos, gambling and high lifestyle attracts us Brits in large numbers every year.
New York city breaks -The world’s capital city as its popularly known is the centre of all action. The list of tourist attractions is longer than London’s and if you’re expecting to get away, beware, you’re getting back into the mad rush. New York is a great weekend or short stay holiday destination if haven’t seen the Statue of Liberty or Madison Square Gardens.
Florida holidays – The sunshine state of the US – Fun doesn’t end any time of the year in Florida. With 3 of the world’s best amusement parks – Disneyland, Seaworld and Universal, Florida is also the world’s amusement capital. Great place for family holidays.

7. Italy holidays – With 240,000 searches a month, Italy comes at number 6. Italy is made of two islands – Sicily and Sardinia. Sicily is the mainland region of Italy where holiday makers go in search of Roman empire history, leaning tower of Pisa, the Colosseums and Rome. Sicily is the largest Mediterranean island. Sardinia or Sardegna is a top holiday destination, famous for its natural beauty and beaches.

8. Caribbean Holidays – Caribbean Islands stand out as holiday destinations for the Americans (because of the proximity and short flights), but Europeans are not far behind. At a combined 200,000 searches per month from UK, The Caribbean is a fast growing holiday destination amongst us. The Caribbean refers to the Caribbean sea, islands in that sea and nearby coastal areas. Top holiday destinations within the Caribbean are Antigua holidays, St Lucia holidays, Jamaica holidays, Cuba holidays and Barbados holidays. Lying between North and South America, the Caribbean is famous for its holidays – from Golfing to sky-diving, fine dining to clubbing, there’s nothing the Caribbean doesn’t offer. That, at a time when Britain is freezing! No wonder, with recent media coverage, Caribbean holidays are busier than ever before.

9. Malta holidays – Coming back to Europe, Malta is a gorgeous island with an English connection. After gaining independence from United Kingdom in 1964, Malta developed itself as a top holiday destination. With English spoken widely, British people face no language barriers and holidays are even more fun. This Mediterranean island country offers some unique features like fishing villages, and a combination of Byzantine, Arab, Phoenician and St John Knights’ culture, architecture and cuisine. 160,000 monthly searches.

10. Dubai holidays – The world’s highest man made structure, world’s first under water restaurant, world’s first palm housing, world’s longest shopping mall, world’s first indoor ski system and world’s highest tennis court are just the tip of the iceberg. Dubai – The city of the world’s firsts opened its doors to the new world and we all visited in large number. Today, Dubai is the top holiday destination in the Middle East. With 150,000 searching for Dubai holidays every month, Dubai stands out amongst the 7 Emirates in UAE. With desert, beaches and mountains to offer, sunny holidays don;t get much better.

11. Maldives holidays – The paradise islands, as the 1 thousand two hundred fascinating Maldives islands are affectionately called, offer crystal clear waters and desert sands in the middle of Indian ocean. With 80 self sufficient islands cum resorts, you’re never short of natural beauty, peace and tranquility. The top “get away from it all” holiday destination Maldives won’t disappoint you. 120,000 curious British holiday makers search Maldives holidays every month.

12. Goa holidays – Further East, Goa is an English holiday maker’s favourite Indian holiday destination. With Churches and Temples co-existing in this city they call “Tropical Paradise”, you’ll find miles of beautiful palm tree beaches and acres of windy paddy fields. Adding to its charm are old fortresses, wide roads and motor cycle hires. The Portuguese were defeated off Goa in 1961 by the Indian army and since then, Goa has grown into the most

Food prices and utilities bills are on the increase and the cost of eating out and socialising is often beyond the monthly means of the average retiree. There is however a place of saving grace not too far away, where one doesn’t have to pay a TV licence, where council tax is less than £100 per year and food prices are far lower. The quaint town of El Saltador, Huercal Overa, ANDALUCIA, Spain, is blessed with affordable restaurants and courteous bars and plenty of discounted opportunities for retirees. And best of all, there is a spectacular opportunity to live permanently in this beautiful location. Just 3-km from Huercal Overa, situated in the picturesque surroundings of orange groves and the El Saltador hills is the Quantum 50+ retirement village. A far cry from the struggle of high VAT and rocketing fuel prices, the Quantum community is home to likeminded expats who have sought a better quality of life and far more affordable and varied lifestyle in El Saltador. Unlike other retirement villages and residential care homes Quantum 50+ is a place where retirees are reborn and senior citizens can explore their dreams, interests and passions outside the financial restriction of the UK.

With on-site concierges ready to take care of your every need, you are free to spend your time enjoying the multiple resort activities which include but aren’t limited to, gardening, computer learning classes, Spanish Cooking classes, Spanish language classes, petanca and quiz and dart nights. Many residents set up their own volunteers clubs or become involved with local initiatives such as the community deforestation program. Others simply enjoy regular shopping trips and great food in Huercal Overa.

Not only do you get considerably more for your money at Quantum 50+ but also a far better quality of life in terms of warmer weather, healthier food, access to the sea (just 15 minutes drive) and living side by side with more natural surroundings. The health benefits of moving to a warmer climate have been proven beyond doubt and El Saltador boasts a year round average climate of 21c. Offering far more for your money in terms of socialising, pursuing interests and passions and healthcare, relocating to the Quantum 50+ resort is an extremely attractive option. With UK provisions and utility prices expected to keep on rising, retirement villages and senior care homes such as this dream-like escape in El Saltador are proving even more lucrative than ever before.

Doesn’t sound like much of a choice, yet these were the accommodation options for those holidaying in Great Britain’s seaside resorts in the 1900s.Given these were the only options, the ‘freedom’ offered by the holiday camp was instantly appealing and holidaymakers were welcomed at the UK’s first holiday camp in 1906 at Caistor-on-Sea, Norfolk. By today’s standards the camp was incredibly basic and certainly had no luxury accommodation on offer! Yet it paved the way for a holiday genre that has been thriving for more than 100 years. Holiday camps continued to make steady progression and 1924 saw the arrival of a holiday camp in Hopton-on-Sea which boasted brick chalets, running water and electric lights – some of the ultimate facilities. However, global events were to have a serious impact on holidays with two World Wars, and the take over of holiday camps to be used as military bases in the Second World War.

Holiday camps really came into their own with a glorious golden era during the 1950s and 60s after the end of WWII. People hadn’t been on holiday for many years and many children had never seen the sea. Life had been incredibly hard and the public were in need of fun and entertainment. The holiday camp could provide all this and more. With swimming pools on site, entertainment in the evenings, competitions including ‘Glamorous Granny’ and ‘Knobbly Knees’ plus plentiful food the camps offered all the right ingredients for an fun and affordable family holiday.

While the offer of cheap sea and sun holidays drew many people to destinations such as Spain in the 1970s, UK holiday resorts such as Great Yarmouth have seen a resurgence of visitors in recent years. As the cost of living continues to soar and with the need to consider ‘greener’ ways to travel, a Great British seaside holiday – with glorious beaches, strolls along the pier and ice cream – is an attractive proposition.

And where better to stay than a holiday village? A far cry from their 20th Century counterparts, Great Yarmouth is home to some of the UK’s best including some with 5-star ratings. With the promise of modern accommodation, a huge range of indoor and outside entertainment for children and adults and onsite eateries, it’s the ideal choice for families.

Great Yarmouth has invested more than £25 million in redeveloping the seafront, creating a stunning new promenade area for visitors to stroll along, and a beautifully lit pedestrianised walkway linking the seafront to the town centre. The town’s rich maritime heritage is evident all around, with a heritage quarter rich in history to explore. The many holiday parks and villages along this part of the coastline expect a bumper year in 2008.

New England is famous for its historic inns, luxurious resorts, and intimate bed and breakfasts. But now add in the varied and startling scenery of sandy beaches, rocky coastlines and the lakes and mountains, and you’ve the ultimate in choices for romantic getaways. But where would I choose to visit and stay? Here are four destinations for romantic getaways in New England that would always make my list.

Acadia Region in Maine
Travel further north than the shopping outlets and the Boothbay Harbor region and you enter another Maine of dramatic coastline, beautiful villages and islands, and Acadia National Park. Here you can cycle on carriage roads with breathtaking views, walk through silent forests or hike to mountain summits, or drive on scenic roads.Visit the park but then slip away to Deer Isle on Penobscot Bay and take in the historic villages of Castine and Stonington, or travel north to the Schoodic Peninsular and tour along coastal Route 1 where fishing villages dot the inlets and secluded harbors all the way to the Canadian border. Places to stay that specialize in romantic getaways can be found in Bar Harbor and Ellsworth both just outside Acadia National Park’s boundary.

BERKSHIRE HILLS IN MASSACHUSETTS:

The rolling Berkshire Hills in western Massachusetts have long been popular with the rich and famous but more recently discovered by those seeking an alternative to the crowded beaches and hiking trails of more popular New England destinations. Nestled in valleys between mountain ranges, and along rivers and streams, are villages where during the day you can discover the outdoors, and at night experience Shakespeare or a musical in any of the towns dotting the region. This is also a recommended spot for fall foliage romantic getaways.

The Berkshires is also home to many of New England’s most exclusive resorts and historic inns centered in the towns of Lenox and Stockbridge.

CAPE COD IN MASSACHUSETTS:

Drive a few extra miles from the tourist haven of Hyannis and you’ll enter what the locals call the quiet or lower cape. This is the Cape Cod National Seashore region with miles of uninterrupted sandy beaches and stunningly beautiful cliffs, dunes, and ocean. You can take a walk through a salt marsh or visit historic sites and see for yourself the forces of nature erode and redistribute land in this geological wonder.

Or you can just share a walk along a sandy lane to a kettle pond and forget about the commitments to keep at home. Recommended towns to stay include Chatham, Orleans and Eastham, all of which have inns and resorts that specialize in lodging and amenities for romantic getaways.

WHITE MOUNTAINS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE:

One of the first areas of New England to be developed for tourism the White Mountains in New Hampshire once boasted a large choice of grand resorts. Today just a few of the resorts remain but the spectacular views and wide-open spaces are still a magnet for those seeking to discover places off-the-beaten path, and explore the peace and quiet of the northern woods. Spectacular scenic drives and mountain villages dot the valleys and invite a stop to admire a covered bridge or take a walk to a waterfall and a picnic lunch together.

The fall foliage in this area is considered some of the best viewing in New England and makes an ideal time for a romantic getaway to one of the inns in Jackson or Bartlett Village or any number of hideaways nestled in Mount Washington Valley.

On 1 October 2010 the new UK building regulations came into force and replaced the previous 2006 version. They apply to non-residential and residential buildings, including those for which planning permission has been granted, but work not yet started.

With buildings producing around half of UK carbon emissions, they set new energy performance standards for buildings. Focusing upon emissions, they present a major challenge for everyone involved in construction – design, costs, compliance and so on.

Part L sets the regulations for heating, mechanical ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, the control of space heating, airtightness/permeability, solar emissions, energy meters, and the testing and commissioning of all systems and structures. The following is a summary of the main changes for new buildings:

A 25% reduction is required in the TER (Target Emission Rate). All nondomestic buildings will have to do comply with a “notional” building being used as a guide to aggregate CO2 emissions. The Code for Sustainable Homes will act as a national standard for domestic buildings and require a flat rate reduction in emissions of 25%. BREEAM ratings will be used to help meet government targets on reaching a 40% improvement over the 2002 standards.

Design flexibility will be limited by the requirement for higher specifications and design standards in order to meet the 25% TER plus substantial revision.

The effects of Solar Gain must be limited in domestic buildings and measures as an assessment of solar overheating. A new approach will be used for nondomestic buildings will assess this through glazing, compared with an “average” building. Such an approach to “passive design” is intended to lead to reduced demand for mechanical air conditioning.
The Quality of Construction of the building envelope will be particularly important in avoiding thermal bridging and securing pressure tested airtightness. Penalties will be imposed for non-compliance.

Building Management Information must be provided to building users and owners concerning the operation and management of all systems within the building service to ensure that no more energy is used that intended by the designer, e.g. at least 75% of lighting must be low energy, while 100% low energy lighting will assist in meeting the TER 25% reduction required.

MEETING THE DEADLINES:: Any scheme for which planning permission had been granted before 1 October had to be started on site by 1 October 2010 to avoid these new building regulations. Various environmental bodies have criticised possible loopholes which might allow building under the 2006 regulations.

DECREASING THE U.K’s CARBON FOOTPRINT: to meet the overall target emission rate government is looking to reduce the “performance gap” between energy efficiencies of new and existing buildings. Part L1 A of the new building regulations include suggestions for reducing a buildings carbon footprint, for instance by lowering the “U-values” – a measurement of the transmission of heat through floors, walls, roofs, glazing etc. The lower the “U-value” the better the performance of the building.

ZERO CARBON EMISSION TARGETS: these have been set by central government to be achieved by 2016 for domestic buildings (2011 in Wales) and 2019 for nondomestic buildings. Designed to help meet these targets the new Part L will be studied further changes in 2013. All construction professionals are being urged to act immediately to review the viability of using renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and low carbon building specifications and techniques in an effort to exceed current minimum standards. It is intended that this will help save future expense as well as increasing a property’s market value. The aim is an overall increase in the nation’s low Carbon buildings and a reduction in energy costs. (For further information click planning portal: )

Comprehensive Service
The Benfield ATT Group provide a comprehensive service for architects, contractors, developers, project owners, self-builders and others to help them meet the greatly increased demands of the new building regulations.

Building Your Dreams
From concept analysis and pre-design sustainability assessment, through planning, engineering, manufacturing design, fabrication, and on-site erection, their aim is to give you “The Buildings You’ve Always Dreamed Of”. Addressing everything from specifications for energy efficiency, airtightness, and window and door selection, to heating, ventilating and the other products needed to achieve a value engineered, cost-effective building envelope, they will assist you in in achieving a truly effective eco-design.

All Forms of Property Development
This applies to all forms of housing development from domestic homes and residential schemes to flats, apartments and upward extensions for Penthouse schemes. These considerations are particularly important when considering Code for Sustainable Homes levels 4 and 5.

The same services are available for non-residential projects, like village halls, visitor centres and other community buildings, as well as nurseries, schools, nursing homes, health facilities, offices and workshops.

A Truly Green Approach to Building
The Benfield ATT Group (www.benfieldattgroup.co.uk) take a comprehensive ecological approach to Sustainable Green Building, embracing the need for waste minimisation, construction design and management (CDM) and architectural creativity within the overall project management facilities available.

The hills that surround and make up the city have a maximum altitude of 238 metres (781 ft) on the Lansdown plateau. Bath has an area of 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi). Along with the rest of South West England, it has a temperate climate which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of England.

Bath is a popular day trip destination for tourists. But a few hours trailing around the main museums or sitting on an open-top bus won’t give you much more than a fleeting impression of the historic town. Bath is a unique destination with layers of historical associations and and a peaceful charm that is all its own, and to really appreciate the city you need to stay more than a few hours.Culture

Bath became the leading centre of fashionable life in England during the 18th century. It was during this time that Bath’s Theatre Royal was built, as well as architectural developments such as Lansdown Crescent, the Royal Crescent, The Circus and Pulteney Bridge.

Today, Bath has five theatres – Bath Theatre Royal, Ustinov Studio, the egg, the Rondo Theatre, and the Mission Theatre – and attracts internationally renowned companies and directors, including an annual season by Sir Peter Hall. The city also has a long-standing musical tradition; Bath Abbey is home to the Klais Organ and is the largest concert venue in the city, with about 20 concerts and 26 organ recitals each year. Another important concert venue is the Forum, a 1,700-seat art deco building which originated as a cinema. The city holds the Bath International Music Festival and Mozartfest every year.

Bath Festivals

Throughout the year Bath hosts a number of small and medium-sized festivals. Tickets and further information for the music and literature festivals can be obtained from Bath Festivals Box Office, 2 Church Street, Abbey Green . The Bath International Music Festival is organized by Bath Festivals Ltd, a long-established charitably registered independent arts company with charitable status. The festival always offers a strong line-up of classical music events, although to many of Bath’s residents the festival is chiefly noteworthy for its spectacular opening ceremony in front of the Royal Crescent. You can enjoy many other festivals like Bath Fringe Festival, International Guitar Festival, Bath Film Festival, Mozartfest, Jane Austen Festival, Bath International Puppet Festival and many more.

If you are planning a vacation to ‘see’ the UK, Bath could make a very good base. London is less than two hours away by train, so you can easily spend a couple of days exploring the hectic big city. And if you really want to see England, you’ll find many of the country’s different facets all within a short distance of Bath, from chocolate-box villages to historic harbours.
